'ken park' is "controversial" photographer/director larry clark's latest film. it's about teenage skaters in suburban california whose bleak existences are marred by suicide, abuse, family issues and boredom. their only outlets are their boards and their sexuality [as i haven't actually seen it for the following reason, this bit is kinda made up]. if you want to see it tough titties cause it's been refused an R rating by the classification folks and therefore can't be screened, exibited, sold etc etc. in australia ever. how sucky is that? seems the main problem is about 6 mins of graphic sex scenes (out of what is probably an hour and a half to two hours of movie) and a bit of violence. guess it's a bit too hyper-reality for us aussies hey? but never mind, we can still watch a whole host of violent and bloody american action blockbusters and still retain our sense of right and wrong, and there was nothing wrong with seeing kerry fox actually giving a blow job in 'intimacy' [apart from the fact it was boring as all hell], just don't show us any sexual abuse scenes or young people getting off alright! cause that never happens in real life - we might not deal with it. what really gets me about the whole 'abuse' thing too is that it's fair game on any nightly news slot, where every major australian tv channel jumps on the scaremongering bandwagon and uses these sensationalist tactics for higher ratings. heaven forbid we should get to consume these topics in a contextualised movie. how come 6 dudes get to decide what the rest of us get to watch anyway? ahh well...enuff of my ranting i'll just get it off the internet - hurrah for censorships final frontier!!
